Description:  Sara Driver’s vivid depiction of Basquiat and New York’s then-gritty, pre-gentrified Downtown, is an exploration of the artist's pre-fame years and how the tectonically shifting arts culture of the late 1970s and '80s shaped his vision. BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival and went on to screen at the 2017 New York Film Festival. Conveying Basquiat’s personal magnetism, eccentricity and non-stop creativity without romanticizing him, BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT serves as another chapter in the ongoing effort to rescue the artist from his own hype. To tell this story, Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante and many others. Drawing upon their memories and anecdotes, the film also uses period film footage, music and images to visually re-recreate the era, drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City -pre AIDS, President Reagan, the real estate and art booms – before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. “A treasure. A transporting doc about the early career of Basquiat and the environment where he flourished. Conveys his personal magnetism, eccentricity and non-stop creativity without romanticizing him.” – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter.  “Vivid and beautifully meditative. It shows how one of the most emblematic American artists of the late 20th century found his voice in the rubble.” – Chris Barsanti, AV Club

Description:  Tim Robbins said it best at the 1997 Academy Awards, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the best neighbor any of us have ever had, Fred Rogers!” For over thirty years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer was beamed daily into homes across America.  In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion.  There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since. Though he may be best known today as a soft-spoken, cardigan-wearing children’s television host, in reality, Fred Rogers’ career represents a sustained attempt to present a coherent, beneficent view about how we should best speak to children about important matters.  A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination. From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom, The Music of Strangers, The Best of Enemies.)  “Both nostalgic and immediate, it’s a documentary you want to hug.” – Hollywood Reporter.  “This beautiful film celebrates a deeply good man with a great gift for repairing.” --Wall Street Journal

Description: Anybody at all serious about cinema will NOT want to miss this superbly written masterpiece crowned with riveting acting and direction…a career crowning achievement of both the talented Ethan Hawke and provocative Paul Shrader!! “First Reformed is a stunner, a spiritually probing work of art with the soul of a thriller, realized with a level of formal control and fierce moral anger that we seldom see in American movies.” – NPR  “It is an exquisite piece of filmmaking and also a blunt, pulpy instrument, a despairing, fully sustained howl of a movie that is easily this director’s finest work in years.” – Los Angeles Times.  Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. From writer-director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver; American Gigolo; Affliction) comes a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary. And the ART Theater in Long Beach is the PERFECT VENUE to see this fantastic, thoughtful, and powerhouse film!

Description: “Ghost Stories’ will terrify you, for a long time”--James Verniere.  Experience three spine-tingling tales of terror in Ghost Stories – a clever and chilling new vision in horror from the UK, brought to you by IFC Midnights! A debunker of all things paranormal, Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman) has devoted his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans on his own television show. His skepticism is put to the test, however, when he receives a file of three chilling, inexplicable cases: a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) haunted by disturbing visions as he patrols an abandoned asylum; an edgy young man (Black Mirror’s Alex Lawther) involved in a hellish car accident deep in the woods; and a wealthy former banker (Sherlock’s Martin Freeman) visited by the poltergeist spirit of his unborn child.   Will they make a believer of him yet?
★★★★.  This triptych of horror tales is presided over with assurance and some seriously mordant wit by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman.” – Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
“It’s a cheeky, devilish anthology of three horror stories tied together by a central mystery, and pound for pound, it’s one of the creepiest movies of the year so far.” – Jordan Crucchiola, New York Magazine/Vulture
“Packed with jump scares, cryptic clues, eerie beings, references to other horror fare and stand-alone, head-shaking weirdness… the movie is an entertainingly creepy little chill ride laced with psychodrama.” – Anita Katz, San Francisco
“Ghost Stories is nothing if not nostalgic: for old-fashioned creepshows that send a mordant chill down the spine, shadows as sinister as the specters within them, and audiences freshly eager to peer into both.” – Isaac Feldberg, Boston Globe.  Directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman.  98 mins.  Rated R.

Description: “A moving portrait of how life goes on.” – Hollywood Reporter.  After Auschwitz is a “Post-Holocaust” documentary that follows six extraordinary women, capturing what it means to move from tragedy and trauma towards life. These women all moved to Los Angeles, married, raised children and became “Americans” but they never truly found a place to call home. What makes the story so much more fascinating is how these women saw, interpreted and interacted with the changing face of America in the second half of the 20th century. They serve as our guides on an unbelievable journey, sometimes celebratory, sometimes heart breaking but always inspiring.“A powerful testament to individual humanity emerging from inhuman horrors.” – Village Voice.  “Jon Kean, the director, chose the material wisely and doesn’t shy from severe images. He and his team also have good ears for anecdotes.” – New York Times

Description:  From award-winning director Phil Grabsky comes this fresh new look at arguably the world’s favorite artist – through his own words. Using letters and other private writings I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to impressionism but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite this, and perhaps because of it, Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. Then, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his garden at Giverney, his humour, insight and love of life is revealed. Shot on location in Paris, London, Normandy and Venice I, Claude Monet is a cinematic immersion into some of the most loved and iconic scenes in Western Art.

Description: Lady Windermere's Fan, a Fabulous new production of Oscar Wilde’s social comedy, live at the Vaudeville Theatre in London. Award-winning writer, actor and director Kathy Burke brings together a talented comedic cast including the Olivier Award-winning actress Samantha Spiro as Mrs. Erlynne, Kevin Bishop as Lord Darlington, and guest starring Jennifer Saunders as the Duchess of Berwick, marking her return to the West End stage for the first time in over twenty years. This is the second play from the Oscar Wilde Season, a year-long celebration of the brilliant Victorian playwright being staged by Classic Spring, a new theatre company led by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe. It is the day of Lady Windermere’s birthday party, and all is perfectly in order. Until her friend Lord Darlington plants a seed of suspicion. Is her husband having an affair? And will the other woman really attend the party? First performed in 1892, Lady Windermere’s Fan explores the ambiguity of upper class morality and the fragile position of women in society in the late Victorian era in one of Wilde’s most popular and witty plays.

Description: The Most Unknown… An epic documentary film told with humor and the thrill of discovery that pushes the boundaries of how science storytelling is approached.  THE MOST UNKNOWN’s unique and intelligent structure brings together nine scientists in nine different disciplines to explain, in simple terms, what they do and what questions they seek answers to. The results are fascinating.  Dark matter, the deep sea and extraterrestrial life are just some of the phenomena we find most difficult to observe and understand. This film takes us to a place where scientists who speak from vastly different disciplines can actually speak a common language and important questions transcend a single laboratory. What emerges is a deeply human trip to the foundations of discovery and a powerful reminder that the unanswered questions are the most crucial ones to pose: How did life begin? What is time? What is consciousness? How much do we really know?  Directed by Emmy Award-nominated and Peabody Award-winning documentarian Ian Cheney (“The Search for General Tso,” “The City Dark”) and advised by renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Encounters at the End of the World”). Created in partnership with Science Sandbox, an initiative of the Simons Foundation

Description: An inspiring comedy-drama that will awaken men to the idea that untangling their inner lives will make them happier.   In the noble hope of becoming a bit more evolved than their fathers, eight men form an all-male support group in which they refrain from beer and football one Sunday a month to sit in a circle where they share their personal issues.  Against their best efforts to maintain a civilized therapeutic forum, the group descends into chaos, as long-standing conflicts and secrets come to the surface and threaten to destroy the group’s trust forever.  The film delves frankly into themes of male identity, competition, sexuality, and grief, and stars Timothy Bottoms, Stephen Tobolowsky, Terence J. Rotolo, Mackenzie Astin, Joseph Culp, Ali Saam, Phil Abrams, and David Clennon.  Critics have called Welcome to the Men’s Group ensemble acting at its finest, a complex, beautifully written, deftly filmed story full of surprises!  The Filmmakers’ goal in the creation of this film is to shine an empathic light on evolving male consciousness today and further the community, growth, and healing for men.   In the rising tide of awareness on male sexual misconduct and the empowerment of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, the timeliness of the film’s message couldn’t be better!

Description: In early-1953 Moscow, under the Great Terror’s heavy cloak of state paranoia, the ever-watchful Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, collapses unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage.  Inevitably, when his body is discovered in the following morning, a frenetic surge of raw panic spreads like a virus in the senior members of the Council of Ministers, as they scramble to maintain order, weed out the competition, and, ultimately, take power. But in the middle of a gut-wrenching roller-coaster of incessant plotting, tireless machinations, and frail allegiances, absolutely no one is safe; not even the feared chief of the secret police, Lavrenti Beria. In the end, who will prevail after the death of Stalin? Features a veteran comedic cast, including Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Andrea Riseborough and Jeffrey Tambor. “Armando Iannucci’s hilarious, profane satire about politburos pole-positioning for power could not be more timely. It’s the funniest, fiercest comedy of the year.” –  Rolling Stone; “The Death of Stalin” makes real-life horrors the source of hilarity – and it is hilarious – while never making light of the insanity that inspired it.  –  Arizona Republic

Description: “NOVEMBER is all-caps CRAZY in the best, funniest, most exhilarating way possible. A mere description cannot, I recognize, do its out-there-ness true justice.”… Nick Schager of The Daily Beast.  Starting April 20, the FABULOUS FRIDA will treat audiences to a RARE cinematic experience: Estonian filmmaker Rainer Sarnet award-winning surrealist fantasy/drama NOVEMBER.  In this tale of love and survival in 19th century Estonia, peasant girl Liina longs for village boy Hans – but Hans is inexplicably infatuated by a visiting German baroness. When Liina sets out to win Hans’ love, things grow incredibly complicated in this dark, harsh landscape where spirits, werewolves, plagues, and the devil himself converge, where thievery is rampant, and where souls are highly regarded – but come quite cheap. Highlighted by mesmerizing black-and-white cinematography by Mart Taniel – winner of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival Best Cinematography award – November is a dark and brilliant fairy tale that marks the arrival of a daring new visionary filmmaker. “This midnight-movie classic in the making uses ancient Estonian folk tales to create something shockingly unexpected. Both gravely serious and demonically funny, it’s meant to knock audiences off balance. Mission accomplished.”– Peter Travers, Rolling Stone;  “Suffused with sorcery and silvery light, “November,” written and directed by Rainer Sarnet, is a bizarre Estonian love story – a mishmash of folklore, farm animals and scabrous fun – in which beauty and ugliness fight to the death.” – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times;  “A deeply peculiar folklore-informed picture in which unrequited love is more troubling than the plague, the Devil and a forest full of ghosts.” – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

Description: Oscar Wilde’s Timeless Comedy..A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, Live from London’s West End!!!  Olivier award-winner Eve Best (A Moon for the Misbegotten and Hedda Gabler) and BAFTA-nominated actress Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) star in this new classically-staged production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy directed by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe. The first play from the Classic Spring Theatre Company’s Oscar Wilde Season, A Woman of No Importance will be captured live at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End. An earnest young American woman, a louche English lord, and an innocent young chap join a house party of fin de siècle fools and grotesques.   Nearby a woman lives, cradling a long-buried secret.  First performed in 1893, Oscar Wilde’s marriage of glittering wit and Ibsenite drama satirized the socially conservative world of the Victorian upper-class, creating a vivid new theatrical voice which still resonates today.

Description: The Life and Work of Environmental Artist…LEANING INTO THE WIND—ANDY GOLDSWORTHY. Sixteen years after the release of the groundbreaking film Rivers and Tides – Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time, director Thomas Riedelsheimer has returned to work with the artist.  Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy follows Andy on his exploration of the layers of his world and the impact of the years on himself and his art.  As Goldsworthy introduces his own body into the work it becomes at the same time even more fragile and personal and also sterner and tougher, incorporating massive machinery and crews on his bigger projects. Riedelsheimer’s exquisite film illuminates Goldsworthy’s mind as it reveals his art.  Official Selection: 2017 San Francisco International Film Festival – World Premiere. ABOUT ANDY GOLDSWORTHY:  Andy Goldsworthy (b. 1956, Cheshire, England) lives in Scotland. He makes works of art using the materials and conditions that he encounters wherever he is. Using earth, rocks, leaves, ice, snow, rain, or sunlight, the resulting artworks exist briefly before they are altered and erased by natural processes. He also uses his own body as a medium, as with his Rain Shadows, or through actions such as spitting, throwing, climbing and walking. He has undertaken commissions in the Queensland rainforest, Australia and the New Zealand coast; in Rio de Janeiro, New York City, St Louis, Montreal and San Francisco; in the New Mexico desert, the mountains of central Spain and Haute-Provence, France, and the fells of Cumbria and Dumfriesshire. He has exhibited in the British Museum (1994); the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2004); Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield (2007); and the Palacio di Cristal, Madrid (2007). He contributes widely to group exhibitions and his most recent solo gallery shows have been in New York (2015) and Madrid (2016). Goldsworthy has published many books throughout his career, beginning with Rain, sun, snow, mist, calm: Photoworks (1985).  Director's Statement:  In 2011, during a shoot in Scotland I met Andy Goldsworthy again. It had been ten years since we released Rivers and Tides and we had not seen each other in the interim. From the very first moment I felt like no time has passed at all – it felt as though we had just waved farewell a few days before. It felt intimate immediately and I became aware of my never-ending interest in this man and his work. We talked a lot and a few weeks later we admitted that both of us were thinking about the option of doing another film together. But Rivers and Tides felt like a huge burden, a big heritage, and we hesitated to go for it. Although a film is just a moment in time it kind of stays forever. People who know Rivers and Tides think they know Andy Goldsworthy. And so we both felt that adding a new perspective to him and his work would be fascinating.

Description: Two Opportunities to Enjoy Amazing Unique Cinema…at the Frida Cinema!!!
THE ENDLESS:  Following their 2014 Lovecraftian modern cult classic Spring, acclaimed filmmakers Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead return with mind-bending sci-fi thriller The Endless. Benson and Moorehead star as Justin and Aaron, two brothers struggling to put their earlier lives in a death cult behind them – until they receive a cryptic video message inspiring them to return to the cult, ten years later after they escaped it. Hoping to find the closure that they couldn’t as young men, they’re forced to reevaluate the potential validity of the cult’s beliefs when they are confronted with unexplainable phenomena surrounding the camp. As the members prepare for the coming of a mysterious event, the brothers race to unravel the seemingly impossible truth before their lives become permanently entangled with that the cult, and its mysterious isolated site in the woods. A nominated hit at film festivals including AFI Fest, Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival, and Tribeca Film Festival – where it was nominated for Best U.S. Narrative Feature – The Endless is an engaging and thoroughly original science-fiction mystery that thrills with grand ideas, shocking twists, impressive performances by a largely unknown cast, and some truly mesmerizing visuals to rival those found in movies with a thousand times its modest budget.  Indie sci-fi doesn’t get much better. “The Endless is a meta-commentary of the nature of storytelling and a self-examination of the creative mind, the film will likely have its audience questioning their perception of time as they look to sky for falling photographs.” – Shelagh Rowan-Legg, ScreenAnarchy;  “The Endless is the purest vision we could ever hope to see from two filmmakers who are as comfortable examining the mysteries of the universe as they are the intimacies of our own hearts.” – Meredith Borders, Birth.Movies.Death. “A demanding, rewarding picture with moments of unusual terror and awe, offering a science fiction/horror scenario on a literally cosmic scale which boils down to a study of a complicated sibling relationship.” – Meredith Borders, Birth.Movies.Death;  “A rich banquet of mind-bending weirdness.” – Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter

THE ROOM: Bust out those plastic spoons!  Tommy Wiseau’s THE ROOM returns to The Frida Cinema every last Saturday of the month through 2018!!  Tommy Wiseau’s peerless magnum opus finds the auteur who shaped a generation taking on the arts of acting, writing, casting, directing, editing and more. What’s even more remarkable: he’s mastered them all. In Wiseau’s The Room, Johnny is a big-time banker working in gorgeously shot San Francisco. His fiancé Lisa, seemingly a happy part of a successful relationship, has wandering eyes…for Tommy’s best friend Mark. Cinema has never witnessed such betrayal!! The Room is an intense, sensual thriller punctuated with brilliant musical contributions by Mladen Milicevic, Jarah Gibson, Clint Gamboa, Kitra Williams & Reflection. Wiseau’s intricately knit web of sweet secrets and bitter lies interrogates the very form of drama itself, abandoning a slick and finished aesthetic to showcase his inventive and creative spirit. Especially notable is Wiseau’s masterful naturalistic acting. Join us and witness a master at work. This is truly unforgettable cinema.

Description: The Frida Cinema is proud to partner with University of California, Irvine and the Bowers Museum – with the support of the the Humanities for All Grant made possible by California Humanities, UC-Mexus, and UCI Illuminations – on Latin American Studies in Motion, a series of cultural events, including four films presented at The Frida, which reflect Latin American history, culture, and recent social and environmental change. On Wednesday, April 25, with the generous participation of Rialto Pictures, join the Frida for a double-feature presentation of short film I Am Joaquín and feature film The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez. The evening will open with I Am Joaquín, the 1969 short film that launched the directorial career of Luis Valdez, who would go on to direct classics Zoot Suit and La Bamba.  A project of his El Teatro Campesino, the twenty-minute short is based on the poem of the same name by Corky Gonzáles, a key text of the Chicano movement. A seminal short film that is rarely given a big-screen presentation, I Am Joaquín received the extraordinary honor of being selected by the National Film Preservation Board for preservation in 2010.  Screening will be followed by The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez – arguably the most authentic Western ever made, as it is based on a remarkable true story.  In June 1901, six hundred Texas Rangers chased Gregorio Cortez, a Mexican-American ranch hand, for eleven days across 450 miles of terrain.  At the time, it was the largest manhunt in Texas history, all set in motion by an unfortunate mistranslation, and amplified by the racially-motivated sentiments of the persecutors.  Edward James Olmos delivers one of his finest performances as the resourceful and passionate Cortez, whose arduous journey would become a legendary symbol of the struggles between Anglo-Americans and Mexican-Americans in South Texas. Both I Am Joaquín and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez have been restored the Academy Film Archive, a project supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Presentation will be followed by a Q&A with Richard Rodriguez, Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies and English at University of California-Riverside.

Description: A Moving and Inspirational Documentary Film:  SKID ROW MARATHON + Q & A with Director and ProducerJudge Craig Mitchell is a tough judge, but he believes in second chances. A dedicated jogger, he began a running club for the homeless at the Midnight Mission in the heart of L.A.’s notorious Skid Row, hoping that through the discipline of running these men and women who had lost everything could reclaim a sense of dignity. Following five of the runners over a period of three years, Mark Hayes’ inspiring documentary takes us from the mean streets of downtown L.A. to Rome, where this improbable band of former junkies, recovering alcoholics and a paroled murderer compete in a world-class marathon. Among them are a man the judge himself sentenced (and who spent 10 years living on the streets), and a 40-year-old single mom who lost everything through her addiction and now finds a new lease on life. This stirring, award-winning film finds hope in the most hopeless of places.  Critical Acclaim: “When the judges and the audience agree, you know the movie has to be special.” – RogerEbert.com; “Hayes’ film is a straightforward documentary, but tremendously moving; the triumphs of these men and women are hard-fought, and their victories will rouse some viewers to action and bring others to tears.” – The Wrap

Description: The Wait is Over—Wes Anderson’s ISLE OF DOGS Is Coming to the Art Theater in Long Beach!!! An outbreak of canine flu in Japan leads all dogs to be quarantined on a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island. 12-year-old Atari (voice of Koyu Rankin) journeys there to rescue his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), and gets help from a pack of misfit canines who have also been exiled. His quest inspires a group of dog lovers to expose a government conspiracy. This stop-motion-animated film from writer/director Wes Anderson features an all-star voice cast which also includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban, Greta Gerwig, and Yoko Ono. There is critical praise a-plenty: “While Isle of Dogs is basically a fizzy, ornately mounted assembly of quirks and barks, the sheer artistry displayed… is so expertly accomplished, and so clearly fueled by love, that you can’t help but grin.” – Vanity Fair; “Wes Anderson crafts a stop-motion fable blending delightful fantasy, visual wonder and timely political parable.” – Forbes; “Don’t let the fluffy faces fool you. Wes Anderson’s latest animation delivers talking dogs and snicker-inducing scenarios. But it’s also bleak and frequently unsettling, a dazzling family movie with the darkest of hearts” – Times UK

Description:  In 1937 the Nazi regime held two exhibitions in Munich: one to stigmatize “degenerate art,” and one, personally curated by Hitler, to glorify “classic art.” Narrated by Toni Servillo (star of Oscar® winner The Great Beauty), Hitler vs. Picasso and the Others is an incredible journey through five exhibitions, displaying masterpieces by Botticelli, Klee, Matisse, Monet, Chagall, Renoir, and Gauguin. Linked to each exhibition are moving stories of those who witnessed the systematic destruction and looting of the day – from the Bernheimer family, who were forced to barter their freedom, to “Hitler’s dealer,” Cornelius Gurlitt, known to have hidden away some of the most priceless art treasures of the century. Revealing the Nazi obsession with art, Hitler vs Picasso and the Others offers viewers a rare look at condemned works that have finally come to light.

Description:  Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, TWELFTH NIGHT, Live from Stratford-upon-Avon. Twelfth Night is a tale of unrequited love – hilarious and heartbreaking. Two twins are separated in a shipwreck, and forced to fend for themselves in a strange land. The first twin, Viola, falls in love with Orsino, who dotes on OIivia, who falls for Viola but is idolized by Malvolio. Enter Sebastian, who is the spitting image of his twin sister...  Christopher Luscombe, director of the ‘glorious’ (Daily Telegraph) Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing (2014 and 2016), returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to tackle Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of "the whirligig of time, "with Adrian Edmondson (Bottom, The Young Ones) in the role of Malvolio and Kara Tointon (ITV’s Mr. Selfridge and Sound of Music Live!) in the role of Olivia. Reviews for this Royal Shakespeare production have been lavish, describing it as visually rich, sumptuous, an unending delight, beautiful, and a great parcel of comic joy!

Description: Cuba’s Forgotten Jewels explores the little-known story of the Jewish refugees who escaped Nazi-occupied Europe and found a safe haven on the Caribbean island of Cuba. After a wave of Jewish refugees to Cuba in the 1920’s and 30’s, the island shut its doors to immigrants, most notably to the Jews aboard the ship the St. Louis in 1939. In 1940, Cuba changed course and took in 6,000 Jewish refugees, including hundreds of Jewish diamond cutters and their families who, for a few years, turned the small tropical island into one of the world’s major diamond-polishing centers. In the factories, women work beside men, Jews beside Cubans. The film was born of the tales that Marion Kreith told her daughter Cuba’s Forgotten Jewels co-director Judy Kreith about her escape from Nazi-occupied Belgium and her teenage years in 1940s Havana. Marion and other refugees interviewed in the film recall their lives in wartime Havana: the draw of Cuban food, music and dance, its language and people, and also the challenges they faced in this unfamiliar land. Features an original soundtrack of Cuban and Jewish music.

Description:  Sony Pictures Classics, the studio whose CALL ME BY YOUR NAME and A FANTASTIC WOMAN just won big at the 2018 Oscars, brings you another fantastic film, FINAL PORTRAIT, starring  Geoffrey Rush, Armie Hammer, Tony Shalhoub, and Clémence Poésy.  In 1964, while on a short trip to Paris, the American writer and art lover James Lord is asked by his friend, the world renowned artist Alberto Giacometti, to sit for a portrait. The process, Giacometti assures Lord, will take only a few days. Flattered and intrigued, Lord agrees. So begins not only the story of a touching and offbeat friendship, but, seen through the eyes of Lord, a uniquely revealing insight into the beauty, frustration, profundity and, at times, downright chaos of the artistic process. FINAL PORTRAIT is a bewitching portrait of a genius, and of a friendship between two men who are utterly different, yet increasingly bonded through a single, ever evolving act of creativity. It is a film which shines a light on the artistic process itself, by turns exhilarating, exasperating and bewildering, questioning whether the gift of a great artist is a blessing or a curse. Critics are applauding FINAL PORTRAIT, proclaiming that Geoffrey Rush shines in one of his best showcases in years, and describing the film as funny, charming, and fascinating!

Description: BEUYS, The Visionary Widely Considered One of the Most Influential Artists of His Generation. Known for his contributions to the Fluxus movement and his work across diverse media — from happening and performance to sculpture, installation, and graphic art — Beuys’ expanded concept of the role of the artist places him in the middle of socially relevant discourses on media, community, and capital.   Using previously untapped visual and audio sources, director Andreas Veiel has created a one-of-a-kind chronicle: Beuys is not a portrait in the traditional sense, but an intimate and in-depth look at a human being, his art and ideas, and the way they have impacted the world.  “Folks in the know hold Beuys in similar standing to Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. Not only offers a psychological portrait of the man, but chronicles the many ways he sought to reverse the effects of our repressive social systems – and how his breakthroughs continue to influence artists today.” – Benjamin Sutton, Hyperallergic.  “The most extensive revisiting of Beuys’s art and life.” – David D’Arcy, The Art Newspaper. Awards: Nominee, Golden Bear, Berlin International Film Festival, Nominee, Glasshütte Original Documentary Award, Berlin International Film Festival

Description: One of the Few Still Undiscovered Treasures of American 70s Cinema. This masterful interpretation of Eugene O'Neill's THE ICEMAN COMETH stands not only as the greatest achievement of the distinguished American Film Theatre project, but also as one of the single richest cinematic re-imaginings of any American play. Near the end of his brilliant and varied career, director Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate, The Train) singled out the little known Iceman as "the best creative experience I ever had." In the faded light of Harry Hope's 1912 skid row bar, a rag tag group of fallen men, each like a ghost haunting the wreckage of his own life, await the annual arrival of Hickey (Lee Marvin). This year, however, the charismatic Hickey brings not the usual rounds of drinks and pats on the back, but the unwelcome news that he's off the sauce for good and has come to persuade Hope's drunks to do the same. One by one, the regulars' booze-basted pipe dreams come under Hickey's leering microscope until finally the most shocking self-deception turns out to be Hickey's own. Academy Award® winner Frederic March (The Best Years of our Lives, A Star is Born) leads an all-star dream cast in a final performance that the L.A. Times declared, "quite simply, perfect." Roger Ebert described Robert Ryan's (The Wild Bunch, The Dirty Dozen) characterization of Hickey's anarchist nemesis as "possibly the best of his distinguished career." But Iceman belongs to Lee Marvin, stepping out of the tough guy roles that made him a star into a haunting portrayal of the madman that hides beneath the smiling face of the life of the party."A majestic and thrilling achievement. Ely Landau and his associates have brought off something remarkable." (Charles Champlin, Los Angeles Times)  Part of the Screen Play: The American Film Theatre series and Laemmle’s incredible Culture Vulture Series.

Description:
The DISASTER ARTIST: Cinematic irony: when a film about what might be the Worst Film Ever Made ends up being one of the most critically-acclaimed films of the year, and a five-time Best Actor Winner and seven-time Best Screenplay Winner (so far). In director James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, Franco himself stars as Tommy Wiseau, writer-producer-director of the 2003 cult-classic disasterpiece The Room.  Based on Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of The Room, The Disaster Artist avoids the trappings of being simply a hit-piece on its notoriously bizarre subject filmmaker by emerging as a celebration of artistic expression, friendship, and dreams pursued against insurmountable odds, elevated by screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber’s alternately hilarious and poignant script.  Led by an invested performance by Franco who all but transforms himself into Wiseau, The Disaster Artist is a portrait of a man whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable, and is a hilarious and welcome reminder that there is more than one way to become a legend—and no limit to what you can achieve when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. “Funny — sometimes brutally — and surprisingly touching, it works whether you’ve seen the source material or not, though there are plentiful shout-outs to die-hard fans.” – Sarah Stewart, New York Post.  “Grade: 4/4. The Disaster Artist is funny from the beginning – but it becomes downright side-splitting once Tommy gets onto a film set.” – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle.  “James Franco is firing on all his creative cylinders in this comic bonanza about Tommy Wiseau, the worst filmmaker of the 21st century. Franco hits a new career peak by making sure his film is as heartfelt as it is hilarious.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Description: The Frida Cinema closes out January’s six-film retrospective of the films of master storyteller Guillermo del Toro with his latest tale of love, war, and monsters – 2017’s critically-acclaimed The Shape of Water. Nominated for 7 Golden Globes, and already the winner of over 45 international awards, del Toro’s masterpiece stars Sally Hawkins as Elisa, a mute woman who works as a cleaning lady in a hidden, high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore. Her life changes forever when she and fellow co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover the lab’s classified secret – a mysterious, scaled aquatic creature from South America that lives in a water tank.  As Elisa develops a unique bond with her new friend, she soon learns that its fate and very survival lies in the hands of a hostile government agent and a marine biologist.  Featuring outstanding performances by co-stars Doug Jones, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg, and set against a mesmerizing score by Alexandre Desplat and equally gorgeous cinematography by Dan Laustsen, The Shape of Water has emerged as one of the most celebrated films of 2017, earning more nominations than any other film at next year’s Golden Globe awards, and taking home the prestigious Golden Lion (Best Picture) at this year’s Venice Film Festival.  “Grade: A.  The Shape of Water is director Guillermo del Toro’s finest film, a lovely, empathetic tribute to Old Hollywood, monster movies, outsiders and love that could only come from the mind of the visionary filmmaker.” – Adam Graham, Detroit News.  “A ravishing, eccentric auteur’s imagining, spilling artistry, empathy and sensuality from every open pore, it also offers more straight-up movie for your money than just about any Hollywood studio offering this year.” – Guy Lodge, Variety.  “Magical, thrilling and romantic to the core, a sensual and fantastical fairy tale with moral overtones, it’s a film that plays by all the rules and none of them, going its own way with fierce abandon.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.  “The Shape of Water is partly a code-scrambled fairy tale, partly a genetically modified monster movie – and altogether wonderful.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times

Description: CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman.  It’s the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian, spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel).  Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio’s sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.“Luca Guadagnino’s tale of budding gay romance in 1980s Italy is one of the most mesmerizing films of the year.” – The Atlantic.  “Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama Call Me By Your Name sneaks up on you — by the end, it stings with the lingering ache of a late-summer sunburn.” – Village Voice.  “First love is as much about hesitancy as it is about exuberance, and Ivory and Guadagnino perfectly capture that sweet turmoil. This isn’t just an instant LGBT classic; this is one of the great movie love stories, for audiences of all stripes.” – The Wrap.

Description: Reunited for the only time after their triumph in Mel Brooks' The Producers, Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel catapult their shared genius for elegant slapstick, manic wit, and sly satire to a level of fearless absurdity that virtually no other comedy team would dare approach. Director Tom O'Horgan, originator of the Broadway smash hit Hair, transforms playwright Eugene Ionesco's "Theater of the Absurd" curio RHINOCEROS into a fluid, character-rich screen comedy that The Hollywood Reporter dubbed, "an excellent film." In the face of a modern urban life devoid of anything but an uninterrupted parade of dehumanizing compromise and disappointment, Stanley (Wilder) tenuously guards his fragile individuality in between gulps of booze. The only solace he enjoys is commiseration with his self-consciously sophisticated neighbor John (Mostel), and his unspoken adoration of a warmly sympathetic co-worker Daisy (70s cult object Karen Black). But as a surreal comic apocalypse begins to transform, one by one, everyone into a rhinoceros, the non-conformism that seemed like Stanley's downfall may be his only salvation. Re-creating the role he originated on stage, Mostel delivers the most jaw-droppingly bravura performance of his career, playing off both Wilder's and his own incredulous terror as the fussy, prissy John metamorphoses (entirely without make-up or camera tricks) into a bellowing rhinoceros. Mostel, Wilder, and Black's generous characterizations and pitch-perfect comic timing streamline Rhinoceros's convulsive outrageousness into an ardent valentine to both knockabout screen comedy and Ionesco's experimental and timely satire. “A fast paced, inventively realized film. Wilder and Mostel portray true feeling for each other better than any comedy team I've ever seen. --David Rosenbaum, Boston Phoenix.  Part of the Screen Play: The American Film Theatre series.
